St Oswald’s School – PE Skills Progression
By the end of Key Stage 2 pupils should be taught to continue to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Intent
St. Oswald’s CE Primary School recognises the value of Physical Education. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities.
We fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Lead healthy, active lives.
- Are taught life skills that will positively impact on their future.
- Are taught the importance of cooperating and collaborating with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Implementation
PE is taught at St. Oswald’s CE Primary School as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas.
Children receive 3 sessions of PE a week in KS2 and 2 sessions a week in KS1, including Woodland Wonder.
We aim for children to:
Enjoy sport and experience success.
Have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports and participate at their own level of development.
Secure and build on a range of skills.
Develop good sporting attitudes.
Experience positive competition.
Have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities in addition to sporting events.
Experience an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also participation, perseverance, resilience and well-being.
Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
Our PE programme aims to incorporate a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.
Impact
Our PE Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes.
- A celebration of learning in assemblies which demonstrates progression across the school.
- Pupil discussions about their learning.
- The use of assessment, questionnaires and surveys (pupils and staff) and by talking to children.
- The quality of lessons and confidence in the teaching of PE improves and as a result the enjoyment and positive outcomes increases.
- The annual tracking of standards across the curriculum
