Curriculum Statement for Maths

Our aim is to provide all children with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to access the national curriculum confidently. Through a high-quality mathematics curriculum and teaching, we develop pupils who are numerate, independent, inquisitive and confident, within a stimulating environment and with the resources to reach their full potential. By the end of Year 4, pupils should know all multiplication tables up to 12 and use mathematical vocabulary with fluency and accuracy. By Year 6, they should be fluent in written methods for all four operations and confident with fractions, decimals and percentages. A rich mathematics education fosters a love of the subject, builds self-confidence and nurtures creativity and achievement.

Intent

To create and deliver a curriculum that provides children with a life-long love of mathematics, where all children have access to a high quality curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable.

Ensure children are confident mathematicians who are inquisitive and not afraid to ask questions, with secure mathematical foundations and a desire to improve.

Provide a wide range of interesting and stimulating elements of mathematics so children learn important vocabulary and develop a good understanding of how maths is integral to everyday life.

To continue to review and update the mathematics curriculum to ensure that staff and children experience good experiences and improve their knowledge and understanding.

To use the White Rose Maths framework across school. Provide children with mastery and greater depth approaches to mathematics through real life problems and reasoning.

The standard (quantity and quality) of work has improved.  An improvement in children’s ability to reason, problem solve and question as well as becoming more independent.

To continue to check school data and curriculum coverage to best support children’s learning and progression as well as staff knowledge.
