Curriculum Statement for Art

By the end of Key Stage 2 pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. They should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history.

Intent

To develop an Art curriculum that provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials.

For children to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.

For children to be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

To work from first hand experiences whenever possible and for art work to be purposeful; be this as a means of expression or to explore the styles of other artists that inspire our own work.

Implementation

To continue to support staff subject knowledge to ensure a good Art curriculum is being taught throughout school.

To plan regular CPD and staff meetings to review the Art coverage within school and develop staff understanding and knowledge.

To provide trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience for children.

To provide a means to display and celebrate the pupils’ artwork in their class, to the whole school and wider community through Achievement Assembly and Art displays in the local Church.

Impact

For children to understand the relevance of what they are learning within Art and to enjoy their Art experiences within school.

An Art Curriculum that is high quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
  • A celebration of learning which demonstrates progression across the school through displays, assemblies and within the local Church;
  • Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
